 RETURN MAP

Plot of a time series as a function of the current and of the previous values.

Given the time series i(n), n=1,2,...N, an m-dimensional return map is obtained by plotting the vector v(n)=[i(n),i(n-),i(n-2),...,i(n-m*)]T where  is an integer delay.
For example, a 3-dimension return map is obtained by plotting the time series in a space where the x-axis is i(n), the y-axis is i(n-1), and the z-axis is i(n-2).
If  i(n) is the output of a dynamical system and the observation time N is sufficiently long, the characteristics of the phase space of the systems can be derived from the return map.
