Spectrum providing spectral estimates over a frequency region wider (sometimes much wider) that the region usually explored by the standard spectral procedures employed in a given field
In case of blood pressure and heart rate time series, the standard spectral approach provides information on fluctuations with a period shorter than about 1 minute, while the Broad-band Spectrum may extend the focus on much slower fluctuations. From the practical point of view the evaluation of broad-band spectra implies the necessity to solve specific problems of frequency resolution and estimation variance with ad hoc techniques of broad-band smoothing.
