 BAROREFLEX EFFECTIVENESS INDEX

Ratio between the number of systolic blood pressure ramps followed by the respective reflex pulse interval ramps and the total number of systolic blood pressure ramps observed in a given time window

Progressive beat-to-beat increases or decreases in systolic blood pressure (SBP) ramps are not always accompanied by baroreflex-driven lengthenin or shortening in pulse interval (PI) ramps. This phenomenon is quantified by the Baroreflex Effectiveness Index (BEI), which may provide information on the baroreflex function that is complementary to the Baroreflex Sensitivity. BEI is defined by:

BEI=(total number of PI/SBP sequences) / (total number of SBP ramps)
